Right to Information (RTI)
The Right to Information Act, 2005 came into force on 12 October 2005 with the objective of ensuring that every citizen has access to information held by public authorities, promoting transparency and accountability in the functioning of public authorities, strengthening public trust, and combating corruption.
The Act applies to all public authorities established or constituted by or under the Constitution of India, by any law enacted by Parliament or a State Legislature, or through a Government notification. It also applies to non-governmental organizations that receive substantial financial assistance, directly or indirectly, from the Government.
Under the Act, every citizen has the right to:
- Inspect any work, document, or record under the control of a Government office or Government-funded institution.
- Take notes, extracts, or summaries from records and documents.
- Obtain certified copies of documents and records.
- Obtain certified samples of any material.
- Access information stored in computers or other electronic media in the form of printouts, floppy disks, CDs/DVDs, tapes, video cassettes, or any other electronic format.
To facilitate the implementation of the Act, every Government office has designated Public Information Officers (PIOs) and Assistant Public Information Officers (APIOs).
